Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2019-2020 school year at Wilmore-Davis Elementary. We are excited for students to return and begin a new year!  Our school received a facelift with new carpet, fresh paint and new furniture in our library as well as playground upgrades (still in progress but coming along nicely), and new hallway configurations.  This fall we will also have 7 security cameras added to the exterior of our building- BIG thanks to Jeffco voters for making all of these improvements possible.

Your child will succeed at Wilmore-Davis!  Our Community Centered Learning model, designed by our staff, ensures that all students have a variety of opportunities to apply the common-core, grade-level standards they learn in class to real-life situations in and outside the classroom.  Throughout the school year, your child will collaborate on numerous Problem Based Learning projects and tasks, attend field trips, practice teamwork, and improve his/her communication skills.  Students will utilize and sharpen their social skills and leadership abilities as they interact with community members and experts from a variety of fields.  Last year our students collaborated with the City of Wheat Ridge Community Garden program, developed meaningful relationships with the residents at Rocky Mountain Assisted Living, planned and led a successful toy drive for Children’s Hospital, designed and facilitated their classroom parties, and organized successful fundraisers for a class ski program.  I can’t wait to see where their curiosity takes them this year!

Some things that make our school AMAZING:

  • Preschool- We are very excited to have our youngest learners in our building and to add a second classroom to our school. We will have 32 young scholars joining us this year!
  • Innovation Room- students and teachers will continue to innovate, create, build, transform, imagine and discuss their learning with others- all in our new space in the LMC. Our Innovation Squad, made up of a fiery group of students, worked hard last year to set standards for how to use the space and researched organizational tactics so students can use their time more efficiently and effectively.
  • Sensory Room- sometimes our students need a safe place to get their bodies to a “just right” place for learning.Learning how to use specific tools and strategies is a life skill that will benefit our students immensely! Our sensory space has been expanded and carpeted.
  • Service Based Learning- All students are grouped with other students from Preschool-5th grade, as well as two staff members; we all participate in learning opportunities and tasks that positively impact our community and world.
  • Our Staff, Learners and Families- We are relentless when we come together to Inspire, Support and Encourage each other!

We offer breakfast, beginning at 8:00am each morning.  After breakfast, students are invited to join into Yoga class in the gym, visiting with friends on the front lawn and benches, reading in the library or creating in the Innovation Space.  Each of these activities will take place from 8:15-8:30am; afterwards, students will be dismissed to start their day in their classroom.  Our official start time is 8:45am and it is imperative that students are on-time for the start of school.

Below are important upcoming dates:

The Wilmore-Davis staff is committed to ensuring that every student receives high quality and rigorous instruction that meets the individualized academic and social/emotional needs of our students.  Our staff will be participating in professional development, throughout the school year, to ensure that that they are using strategies and techniques that will support students with their academic and social/emotional growth.  In order to observe, support, monitor and evaluate the teaching and learning that happens on a daily basis I will be spending two full days every week in classrooms as well as subbing for every teacher at least once during the school year- some of my favorite days! Doing so gives me the opportunity to provide real-time feedback to students and teachers as I interact with them on a regular basis.  This means I may not always be easy to find in the office so if you need to see me, please see Joyce or Andy to set a meeting.

Our efforts are complimented when we work together with parents and community members. We encourage all parents to visit and/or volunteer at our school.  Please read the calendar/handbook for more information about volunteer opportunities, our PTA, RISE conferences, and safety policies and procedures.  And please make sure that your student READS, QUESTIONS, and TALKS to you every day.

I am eager to begin my 3rd year as the principal at Wilmore-Davis!  For those of you new to our community, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you a bit about myself.  I have worked in Jefferson County Schools for 19 years; I have served as a school social worker, assistant principal and principal.  During my childhood I lived in 10 different states and moved almost every year that I was in school. I graduated from Rocky Mountain High School in Ft.Collins, received my Bachelors degree from University of Colorado at Denver, my Masters degree from New York University and my Principal certification from the University of Denver. I am married to Andrew and have a 14 year old daughter named Sienna and ten year old twins named Jason and Brianne.

I feel truly fortunate to be your principal this year. Our staff realizes that you have high expectations of us and your student and we appreciate the trust you put in us.

I look forward to seeing all of you at 5:00 pm on August 12th for our Teacher Meet and Greet.
