Dear Families,

Thank you to everyone who attended our RISE meetings. We enjoyed meeting and

seeing all of you and the conversations that occurred in the classroom added to the

great community that Wilmore-Davis has developed over the years. We look forward

to applying the feedback you gave us to our next meetings in December. If you didn’t

make it to the RISE meeting, please reach out to your child’s teacher to get the valuable

information that you missed out on and put RISE meeting #2 on your calendar for

December 11th and 12th.

Our first Service Based Learning Day was a Huge Success! Students were grouped into

vertical classes (in groups with students K-6) and learned about the recent hurricanes

that have affected so many residents in Texas and Florida. Our staff members helped

lead students through hands-on learning as they built structures and then watched

them be destroyed by a “hurricane.” Next, students put themselves in someone else’s

shoes and practiced empathy while thinking about how fellow humans must have felt

during the hurricanes. Lastly, they took time to write letters of support and hope to

people affected by the devastation. The letters were thoughtful, kind and encouragingyou

should be very proud of your child and our school community!

We also had our first Parents in Leadership (PIL) and Parent Teacher Association (PTA)

meetings this month. We were fortunate to have a community member, that no longer

has students at Wilmore-Davis, attend our PIL meeting but we didn’t have any current

family members so please think about joining this important meeting; we discuss our

school budget, make recommendations about spending & purchases, discuss district

recommendations & plans and review our school Unified Improvement Plan. Our PTA

meeting was well attended and had the distinct honor of recognizing our PTA Warriors

of the Week. We also discussed fundraising, community events and the possibility of

after school programming. Attending these meetings is another terrific opportunity to lend your voice to

important decisions that positively impact your child’s education and school

experience.

Over the last couple of weeks, I’ve spent a lot of time out on the playground

getting to know kids. It’s fun to see them in a relaxed atmosphere having fun,

being creative and consistently finding new ways to expend energy. Last week I

started spending more time in classrooms, observing students interact in small

groups and/or with their teachers as they were learning new concepts and

information. Our students are showing their understanding in a variety of ways:

through application during problem based learning; while applying a new

strategy to a complex problem and as they support each other when

collaborating on group projects. It’s witnessing these moments that inspires me

to lead our learning community!

I look forward to seeing many of you at school soon. Please remember I am always available for a meeting or

phone call; your collaboration, support and communication are key to ensuring Wilmore-Davis is the very best

educational setting for your child and all of our students.

Enjoy the fall weather!
